Jodie lives in and loves Winnipeg, Manitoba with her partner Jamil and dog Jackson. By day, she is the event planner for The North End Community Renewal Corporation and by night she is an Arts and Culture Reporter and Sex Columnist for The Manitoban, anti-street harassment crusader and one half of the Hollaback! Winnipeg team, and a vegan foodie. You can find her at the curling club, throwing rocks for her team Curl Interrupted on Friday nights; getting elbow-deep in the batter of some baking experiment; at the farmer's market; amidst the pile of books and nail polish in her 'fort femme'; or drinking a pot of tea to herself.

Our 5-minute reviews of some of the albums hot and fresh out the kitchen

Each week at the Rooster, we bring you reviews on some of the week's new releases. This week, we bring you great new albums from Gold & Youth, Laura Mvula,  Beams and The Boxer Rebellion. Beams, Just Rivers Ontario alt-folk band Beams's first offering is a solid one. Just Rivers is the perfect little 11-song album that lasts just long enough to show off their range, get in enough of their sweet harmonies, bewitch you with the way they can change tempo, and sneak in a cover... Just Be Stevie Nicks

Taking advice from Tavi and Stevie

TEDxTeen - Tavi Gevinson: Still Figuring it Out   Stevie Nicks and that band you may have heard of called FLEETWOOD FREAKING MAC are in town this weekend. Ever since I was a teenager, I have been obsessed with Stevie Nicks and her flowy skirts and jangling tambourine and her "I don't give a fuck"(in the nicest possible way) attitude. She is a woman who is a powerful, present performer with a bewitching voice who is unapologetically emotional, passionate, and you kinda still... [Keep Reading]

Crazy Sexy Kitchen Cookbook Review and Beetroot Ravioli Recipe

Kris Carr is a bit of a legend in the blogosphere - she is one of the first women to turn a blog into a professional career while also recovering from cancer and documenting her journey. She now identifies herself as a 'cancer thriver' and a 'wellness activist'. I'd seen her cookbook mentioned on a bunch of blogs that I read, but I was skeptical - it all seemed a little 'woo woo' to me. I was definitely wary of buying another cookbook just full of salad recipes or... [Keep Reading]

Winnipeg - your new favorite breakfast spot has arrived

Osborne Village Cafe steps up

Is it just us vegans, or has everyone else been feeling the pinch of the closing of two of Winnipeg's most favorite breakfast joints - The Black Sheep Diner and Fresh Cafe? It's not just that they made breakfast, but they offered something more than the standard cafe breakfast - they offered fresh, lighter options made with local ingredients and great flavours. Well, in swoops Osborne Village Cafe with its Superman-like cape to save us from breakfast monotony. The cafe recently recieved... [Keep Reading]

A Canadian Chanteuse in Europe

Jenny Berkel chats with us from France

Jenny Berkel landed in a grey, drizzly Paris six weeks ago for her first European tour. The Winnipeg transplant has quickly become a fixture of the local music scene with her bewitching vocals and sweet strums.  David Simard, a "good friend and great crooner", invited Jenny to join him for this tour. He was working with a Paris-based tour manager and invited her to open for him on his jaunt around Europe. Jenny says it was a good opportunity to expand outside of Canadian borders... The best ways to spend a sunny, springy weekend

We might be short on the typical indicators of spring at the moment(it is sleeting as I write this) but one of the surest hopes that we can have that spring really is on its way is a social calendar bursting with great things to do. This week, there’s something for everyone - the raddest local bands, drinking and talking about the environment, shopping the local artisan market and art lectures amongst others. So grab a friend and make a plan to hit up as many amazing events as you can... [Keep Reading]

Smoothie Operator

Starting the day off right with minimal effort(plus a special deal!)

I feel like my boyfriend might have asked for a Magic Bullet as a joke two Christmases ago, but the man earnestly and unironically loves Judge Judy - so I assumed he was being straight up. Well, I'm glad he did because that little baby changed our life and started a new love affair for the both of us: with smoothies. They can take just as much vitamins, minerals, protein, hydration, antioxidants, all other kinds of assorted nutritional benefits and deliciousness as you can cram into them... [Keep Reading]

Our 5-Minute Reviews of Some of This Week's New Releases Hot and Fresh Out the Kitchen

Beacon - How We Separate Hot and heavy slow jams, mesmerizing synth and those floaty/dreamy vocals that you know and love Beacon for are all out in full force on their first full-length release. It’s more grown-up, refined and restrained than the two EPs they released last year. Despite ditching the heavy R&B influence, this album actually manages to be sexier and sexier than its predecessors. From the second it’s ushered in with the first track, Bring You Back, you know you... [Keep Reading]

Tara Davis Studio Boutique opens Global Mini-shop today

As if her sunny, airy shop on McDermott Street wasn't already lovely enough and packed with colorful, beautiful things made my Canadian hands; Tara Davis is upping the ante today when she opens a new mini-shop. Tucked into a room just off of the main shop and art gallery, the mini-shop is filled with items with a social conscience. While Tara's policy has always been that everything in both her Nelson and Winnipeg shops must be made in Canada, this lovely little corner of the boutique... [Keep Reading]
